                                    Philadelphia Zoo, Philadelphia, PA.

Provide diagnostic pathology support for Zoo’s animal collection, performing ~300 necropsies per year.  Maintain necropsy records and historical archives of necropsy reports, glass slides, photomicrographs, and paraffin-embedded tissue blocks.  Prospective and retrospective studies of zoo animal diseases based on current cases and archived materials.  Departmental budget preparation and oversight, supervision of assistant pathologist.

                                   

Feb 1997 – July 1997     Director of Comparative Pathology

                                    Coulston Foundation, Alamogordo, NM.

General pathology support for a large biomedical research laboratory and non-human primate colony.  Supervision and administration of histopathology laboratory and Biosafety level 3 necropsy facility. Supervision of 2 histotechnologists, performing all phases of sample processing for light and electron microscopy. Quality control, data collection, and documentation in accordance with GLP standards. Composition and revision of Standard Operating Protocols for laboratory practices.

Training of residents and senior veterinary students in general and comparative pathology, gross and surgical pathology service, and lectures.  Weekly seminars in comparative pathology.  Responsible for final diagnosis of all avian and exotic animal necropsy and biopsy cases.  Implemented protocols for primate and hazardous exotic animal necropsy procedures.  Pathology support and collaborative research on toxicosis of oil spills on American coots, therapies for lead toxicosis in cockatiels, causes of mass mortalities in common murres, and investigations into metastatic carcinoma of California sea lions and congenital anomalies in northern elephant  seals.
